What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is an innovative treatment for depression, specifically for those who haven’t responded to other therapies. Ketamine, originally an anesthetic, has been found to provide rapid relief for depressive symptoms by impacting NMDA receptors associated with the neurotransmitter glutamate. Although the exact mechanism is still under investigation, research shows promising antidepressant effects. Due to the nationwide intravenous (IV) fluid shortage, we currently offer only ketamine delivered via intramuscular (IM) injection, although IV administration will be offered in the future.

Benefits of Ketamine Treatment for Depression:

Ketamine has the advantage of fast action compared to traditional antidepressants, which often take weeks to reach full effectiveness. Many patients report noticeable mood improvements within hours to days of a ketamine session. Clinical studies indicate that, with continued treatment, ketamine can provide both immediate and sustained reductions in depressive symptoms, offering a valuable option for those who haven’t benefited from conventional medications.

What to Expect with Ketamine:

Ketamine is administered in a clinic under the supervision of a healthcare provider and cannot be taken at home. During each session, you’ll receive a single injection of ketamine, after which you’ll be monitored by clinic staff for about one to two hours. Initial treatment often consists of two sessions per week for the first month, then weekly or bi-weekly as maintenance, depending on your response and individual treatment plan discussed with your psychiatrist.

Side effects of Ketamine:

Common side effects include mild sedation, dissociation, and a “dreamlike” feeling that typically wears off within an hour or two. This observation period is required for safety and to allow side effects to subside before leaving the clinic. Other possible side effects include nausea, dizziness, increased blood pressure, and fatigue. Patients are advised not to drive for the remainder of the day after receiving treatment.
