    When to Consider Emergency or Inpatient Care First

    If you are uncertain whether a patient is appropriate for outpatient evaluation, contact our office. A consultation may still be useful, but patient safety and level of care come first.

    What to Include With a Referral

    Diagnosis and current symptoms

    Helps determine whether the patient is appropriate and which treatments to evaluate.

    Medication trial history (drug, dose, duration)

    Helps assess adequacy of prior trials and identify remaining options.

    Psychotherapy history

    Helps determine whether ERP, CBT, or other therapy is already in place.

    Prior TMS, esketamine, ketamine, ECT, or VNS

    Avoids duplication and guides risk-benefit discussion.

    Hospitalization and safety history

    Helps determine whether outpatient care is appropriate.

    Relevant medical history and medications

    Screens for contraindications and safety concerns.

    Rating scales (PHQ-9, MADRS, GAD-7, Y-BOCS)

    Establishes baseline severity and treatment targets.

    Insurance information

    Allows our team to begin prior authorization and coverage review.
